Job Description

Primary Purpose: 

The Assistant Principal of Student Services’ (APSS) primary responsibility is to support the school’s special programs.  The APSS accepts responsibility for the successful implementation and compliance coordination of all campus/district special programs (e.g.  Special Education, English as a Second Language, Gifted & Talented, Section 504, Dyslexia).  The APSS provides on-going communication to the campus principal regarding the compliance progress of each program on at least a monthly basis.  The APSS serves as the lead administrator for ARD and LPAC committee meetings. The APSS coordinates service of and works directly with contracted services providers for special programs (e.g. diagnostician, speech therapist, occupational and physical therapists, counseling).  and uses the assessment data in determining the appropriate LEP student program placement.  The APSS assists the campus’ Testing Coordinator in the planning and execution of all state assessments (i.e. STAAR, STAAR Alt, TELPAS, Las Links) and uses the assessment data in determining the appropriate LEP, SpEd, 504, and Dyslexia student program placement. The APSS also oversees the Child Find, Homeless, At-Risk, and Deaf program compliance.  The APSS also manages and provides oversight of the Title program budget. 



  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • SpEd Certification and ESL Supplemental Certification
  • Texas principal, Texas administrator’s certificate or comparable job related training, preferred



  • Two years teaching experience in education
  • One year administrative experience in education (preferred)

 Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Working knowledge of ARD, LPAC, and compliance procedures/processes
  • Ability to evaluate the implementation of instructional accommodations/modifications in classroom instruction
  • Ability to implement policy and procedures associated with:  special programs, campus-wide initiatives and district compliance reporting
  • Ability to interpret data
  • Ability to develop and lead professional learning opportunities regarding special programs
  • Ability to provide one-on-one support to teachers, students, families regarding the successful implementation of student support measures
  • Ability to work with community contracted partners in providing identified student services
  • Demonstrate a passion for and commitment to EPLA’s mission and educational model
  • Strong organizational, communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills
  • Personal qualities of maturity, humility, strong work ethic, sense of humor, and a “roll-up-my-sleeves” attitude

Responsibilities and Duties include but are not limited to: 



  • Oversees the planning, development, organization, management, direction, and implementation of all aspects of all Student Services programs for EPLA, including: Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS); crisis management, including services for homeless and foster youth; compliance, mental health and wellness programs
  • Monitors and ensures EPLA’s compliance with federal and state regulations and ensures that all practices in the district are legal and ethical for each student/family so that each child has the opportunity to achieve at a high level of success
  • Manages external partnerships and contractors that provide services for students and families.

  • Establishes a school culture that is centered on core values that ultimately deeply cares for each student and staff member and holds each student and staff member to the highest level of accountability.
  • Creates a professional learning community in which teachers regularly collaborate to ensure ALL students are provided an instructional program that is personalized and adheres to outlined accommodations/modifications.
  • Ensures effective communication with families with respect to student academic performance, student conduct, school programs, and school performance.
  • Demonstrates ability to provide instructional leadership informed by a nuanced understanding of EPLA best practices.
  • Demonstrates ability to provide teachers with specific, actionable, qualitative (i.e., narrative) and quantitative (i.e., rubric) feedback on their performance as it relates to special programming implementation in the instructional setting..
  • Able to manage a data-driven instructional process that includes rigorous Pre-Post test alignment of assessments and IEP learning goals to determine annual student growth. 
  • Oversee teacher implementation of EPLA curriculum__ensuring grade level alignment per IEP and LPAC decisions 
  • Create, maintain, and update whole school, grade level, and teacher level student academic and assessment records and reports that is used for compliance reporting
  • Oversee required standardized testing required of special program students



  • Able to implement systems that “sweat the small stuff,” maximize the programmatic goals of the school, and are scalable as the school grows. 
  • Develop solutions to complex problems that involve multiple stakeholders and steps.
  • Manage with fiscal responsibility - develops a disciplined planning process that identifies the school’s highest-priorities in funding special programs
  • Work in conjunction with the Dean of Special Services & Culture to ensure the uniform implementation of district expectations associated with special programming across all campuses in the district


Additional Duties

  • Recruit and assist in the hiring of school faculty
  • Work with EPLA Leadership Team in providing on-going staff PD and compliance updates regarding all special programs on the campus
  • Work with EPLA Administrative Leadership Team to develop and lead SOAR and year-long teacher professional development
  • Support the safety and culture of the campus by performing before school, lunch, and after school supervision duty assignments
  • Additional duties as assigned.


Supervises:  The APSS supervises the SpEd teacher, ESL teacher, ESL tutor, SpEd paraprofessional, all contracted special program service providers (i.e. diagnostician, speech therapist, OT/PT), and other teachers as assigned by the campus principal.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to talk, hear, and communicate with both adults and children.  The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally climb ladders.
