Job Description

MISSION: The Texas Education Agency (TEA) will improve outcomes for all public-school students in the state by providing leadership, guidance, and support to school systems.

POSITION OVERVIEW: The Texas Education Agency’s Financial Compliance Division is seeking a talented, ethical, and highly motivated self-starter to join our team of professionals committed to improving educational outcomes for all public-school students in the state of Texas. The work performed will enable the Texas Education Agency (TEA) to ensure that every child is prepared for success in college, a career, or the military.

The Financial Auditor will play a critical role in ensuring compliance with accounting rules and local, state, and federal standards and statues related to annual financial reporting of Texas schools. The team member will manage and perform second level review work for annual financial reports of school districts, open-enrollment charter schools and regional education service centers. A successful candidate must be honest and ethical in all work, highly self-motivated, technically proficient in audit methodologies, skilled at developing positive team relationships, and able to work under minimal supervision with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Desk Review and Reporting: Conducts annual financial report audit reviews and incorporates the external auditor’s findings and the TEA comments, as appropriate, into the final reports or letters.
Planning and Process Improvement: Prepares and modifies planning review programs and procedures to ensure completion of the review programs and final review letters; researches all applicable criteria and determines the significance and scope of the potential issues to be addressed in the review programs, engaging stakeholders and seeking input regarding process changes; ensures that required reviews are completed in a timely manner in accordance with state and federal requirements.
Customer Service and Stakeholder Support: Provides technical guidance and communication to team members and external stakeholders.



Education: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university; with a bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, or related field.

Experience: At least four (4) of experience in Accounting, Auditing, Financial Compliance and/or a related field. School district, charter school, government or non-profit environment is preferred.

Substitutions: An advanced degree may substitute for two years of required experience.


Knowledge of Generally Accepted Government Auditing Standards (GAGAS), Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Governmental Accounting Standard Board (GASB) pronouncements, Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) accounting standards, and/or the Financial Accountability System Resource Guide (FASRG), including state, and federal statutes related to annual financial reporting.
Proficiency in Microsoft Access, Excel, PowerPoint and Word.
Ability to prepare audit review programs, review documentation, gather information; prepare work papers, develop issues/findings and to compose clear, concise reports.
Highly organized; ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
Meticulous attention to detail with an ability to produce high quality work.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Ability to engage in a collaborative, results-oriented team environment.
Ability and desire to self-reflect, give/receive feedback and continuously improve.
Certified Public Account (CPA), Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE), or Certified Government Auditing Professional (CGAP) designation preferred.
Knowledge of Texas school finance and/or Texas Association of School Business Officials (TASBO) certification preferred.
