Job Description

Chief Operating Officer

About NYOS
NYOS Charter School—Not Your Ordinary School—is a free public charter school that was founded in 1998 by a group of parents who wanted more out of education for their children. It is through a commitment to our students, our staff and our academic excellence that we have been able to grow to serve more than 1,600 students in PreK through 12th grade.

At NYOS, we educate the whole student. We foster a collegial Pre-K – 12 program that challenges each learner with rigorous academics, innovative strategies and expectations for civic engagement.

Position Overview
The combination of strong academic results, operational excellence and the continuous demand from more families led us to grow. In the summer of 2021, we expanded our campus to provide students with improved resources and opened our doors to more new students than ever before.

To support our recent growth, we created a new role, a Chief Operating Officer (COO), to oversee finance, operations and business services. The COO serves as a member of our executive leadership team and reports to and serves as a thought partner to the Executive Director. The COO directly manages a team of three, including Directors of Operations, Director of Finance, and Director of Business Services, and a total team of 32.

Primary responsibilities include:
Organizational Leadership

Promote a culture of high performance, excellence and continuous improvement grounded in our core values

Develop a team culture that incorporates a strong customer service orientation

Finance, Operations and Business Services Management
Establish a definition for excellence; develop and implement strategies to drive high performance with clear metrics of success
Lead finance (budgeting, long-term planning, reporting, accounting, audits, payroll, insurance, internal controls, policies), school operations (facilities, IT/IS, food service, nursing and transportation) and business services (human resources, communications & community outreach, front office, and student information systems). Align team goals and outcomes with organizational goals
Collaborate with the Chief of Schools and school principals to deliver high quality services and insightful reporting as they deliver transformational educational outcomes for students
Lead the execution of sustainable, scalable, cost-efficient systems, processes and services. Codify and refine existing practices to successfully operate our school
Lead high quality compliance including timely reporting with federal, state, authorizer, and local agencies regulations and mandated practices
Develop and implement strategies to ensure vendors meet the needs of the organization and their contracts align with regulatory standards

Qualifications
The ideal candidate brings a minimum of 10 years of professional experience and has overseen or progressed through leadership roles across finance and operations
