Job Title: School Nurse
Reports to: Director of Operations

NYOS Charter School is Not Your Ordinary School, located in North Austin Texas. In our organization chart, students are at the top, sixteen hundred of them, so staff are here to serve students on their journey to college readiness and community contribution. We foster a collegial Pre-K 12 program that challenges each learner with rigorous academics, innovative strategies, and expectations for civic engagement.
Primary Role:
NYOS is searching for a School Nurse (RN) to support our NYOS Charter School Community. The ideal candidate is self-motivated and comfortable working under minimal supervision and remains calm and organized. Candidates should possess accountability and strong work ethic and become a model of professional, ethical, and responsible behavior for our students.
Qualifications:
Graduate of an accredited professional nursing education program
Valid registered nurse license (RN) to practice professional nursing in Texas from the State Board of Nurse Examiners
Certified by Texas Department of Health to conduct vision and hearing screening
Current CPR/AED Certification
Two years nursing experience in a school or similar setting
Knowledge of health appraisal to identify student health needs
Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
Ability to implement policies and procedures
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Nursing Services
Provide direct care utilizing professional assessment skills, the nursing process, and established school health protocols.
Carryout first aid and emergency procedures for ill and injured students.
Conduct screening activities including measuring height and weight, testing vision and hearing, and examining spinal cord and scalp.
Serve as health advocate for students.
Notify parents of accident or illness and secure medical care for students in emergency cases (if parents or emergency contact cannot be reached).
Coordinate management system to administer medications to students at school. Administer medications according to district policy and procedures.
Establish and implement effective procedures for mandatory screening programs. Make referrals as necessary.
Develop and coordinate continuing evaluation of campus health program and make changes based on findings.
Educate faculty and staff as needed on health related topics.
Serve as health liaison between school, physicians, parents, and community.
Assess student problems and make appropriate referrals working with students, teachers, parents, and medical and health care professionals as needed.
Participate in Admission, Review, and Dismissal Committee, crisis team, and school committees as required.
Communicate regularly with Principal, school Director of Operations, school counselor, teachers, parents, food services, and other staff regarding health services issues.
Review, evaluate, and maintain immunization records.
Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required, including clinic records and accurate, updated health records on all students.
Requisition supplies and equipment needed to maintain clinic inventory.
Comply with policies established by federal and state laws, Texas Department of Health Rule, State Board of Education rule, and board policy in health services area.
Report potential health and safety hazards to principal.
Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.
Maintain certification in CPR, vision and hearing screenings, and as a health screener.
Perform other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Serve as staff liaison for the Student Health Advisory Committee. Recruit members. Plan and facilitate meetings 3x per year.
Professional Requirements:
Maintain strict confidentiality regarding information concerning students, parents, staff, and classroom incidents.
Adhere to ethical and legal standards and model behavior that is professional and responsible.
Participate in approved professional development to improve skills related to job assignment.
Follow NYOS standard procedures for communication, interaction, and discipline as outlined in the NYOS Staff Handbook.
Travel between campuses as required for the completion of job duties.
Follow standardized practices and procedures.
Maintain emotional control under stress.
Assume exposure to bacteria and communicable diseases.
